Getting away from it all!

posted 12 Jun 2013 06:22 by Alan B.

Sometimes we all need a break and that can be especially true if you are living with Multiple Sclerosis or caring for someone with MS. It's not always easy finding the right type of holiday, short break or respite but there is help available.

The next meeting of the Moray MS Support Group will host Lisa Stronach from the Short Breaks Bureau. Lisa will talk about the work of the Bureau and how it can help you identify a break that really meets your needs. There is information on this website HERE but after Lisa's talk I intend to create a new Short Breaks page with more information and links. So watch this space!

In the meantime, come along to the Support Group on Friday if you are interested. The meeting is at 11.00am on Friday 14th June 2013 at the Oaks in Elgin

MS Research project

posted 5 Jun 2013 06:26 by Alan B.

I have received the following letter. If anyone is interested you can get in touch with the researchers. I have a copy of the Patient Letter they refer to so Contact Us if you'd like me to send you a copy.

Dear Alan,

fastforward research have been commissioned by a pharmaceutical company to conduct independent research to better understand the MS patient experience, including views on support services and treatment options.

As part of this project we are recruiting MS patients who have been diagnosed with MS within the last 12 months and are currently on DMD treatment (Copaxone, Avonex, Betaferon or Rebif).

We would be extremely grateful if you could mention our project to any MS patients you can identify & who you think meet the following criteria:

·         All must be comfortable discussing their experiences with other people who have MS

·         All must have access to the internet at home

·         All must have been diagnosed within the last 0-1 years

·         All must be on disease modifying drugs (DMDs)

The project will involve taking part in an online chat forum that provides opportunity to discuss with other MS patients from across the UK & Republic of Ireland and also allows participants to have a private space to comment on experiences or feelings. It will be open for 2 weeks (with 1 week break between each week).

As a thank you for taking part in the research we can offer each patient £40 or they can choose to donate to a charity of their choice.

As a thank you for your time and help, we would like to offer £40 for each one of your patients who goes on to take part in the marketing research project.

Please mention our project to any patients meeting the above criteria who you think may be interested in taking part.  Please give them a copy of the attached patient letter & ask them to contact the 4discussion team:

Please contact:           Tom/Janine

Telephone:                  01625 543712 or 543700

Email:                          4discussion@4discussion.info

Please be assured we keep all patient details confidential and they are not revealed to anyone who may view the discussions.

The discussions will be confidential & all patients will be anonymous, however we will be monitoring chats and uploads, additionally our client may review anonymous online materials/chat. All information will be kept confidential in accordance with the ABPI Code of Practice, which governs the activities of pharmaceutical companies.

World MS Day

posted 29 May 2013 05:54 by Alan B.

Did you know that today, 29th May 2013, is World MS Day? There are a lot of "days" designated to draw attention to this or that. Sometimes too many? Anyway today is the day when a bit more attention may be drawn to MS and the challenges we MSers face in dealing with the condition. And the sun is shining in Moray! Summer!!

A Trip to Perth

posted 24 May 2013 01:49 by Alan B.

I've received the following from the MS Society. It may be of interest and Perth isn't that far!

There is still time to register to attend the Scotland Council Annual Meeting on Friday 14 June in Perth. This is your chance to hear all about the MS Society’s upcoming activities, and find out how you can get involved. Most importantly our role is to represent people affected by MS in Scotland, so we need you to come along and tell us what you think about our work, and help us shape what we do.

On the day you will hear about the latest in MS research from world leading Professor of Neurology, Siddharthan Chandran. Christine Carlin, our new Director for Scotland, will also be there to talk through the Society’s work in Scotland. You will then get your chance to put forward your questions in our ‘ask the panel’ session.

We are offering some fantastic workshops with a choice of topics from the financial implications of living with MS to mindfulness. As we’ll also be celebrating Carers’ Week we will have a workshop dedicated to carers. It is also a great chance to meet up with other people and catch up on their news.

Places are limited and will go quickly so book today!

For full details and to book your place please visit:

www.mssociety.org.uk/councilannualmeeting

Or for more information please call events officer Garry Kinnear on 0131 335 4073. Booking closes on Monday 3 June.

MS Specialist Nurse - Good News!

posted 23 May 2013 06:30 by Alan B.

I've just heard the good news that a new MS Specialist Nurse for Moray has been appointed following interviews held last week. She is Gillian Alexander who some of you may remember as the Continence Nurse for Moray, a post she held before taking up a Practice Nurse job. Gillian should start by the end of June (hopefully not later than that) but I will keep you all posted on developments.

Welcome to Gillian! The Specialist Nurse role is so important to MSers. I'm sure she'll do a great job.

Cake Break Update!

posted 15 May 2013 13:57 by Alan B.

I just got his message about the recent Cake Break organised by the Moray MS Support Group! It speaks for itself. ell done Anita and Paul.

Hi All

This is just a big thank you to everyone who came to the Cake Break at the Oaks Last Friday and helped us raise a total of £220. It was a real team effort with everyone contributing; whether it was baking and bringing along delicious cakes, rearranging the furniture, making teas & coffees, selling tombola tickets and serving the cakes, a real success. Out of the £220 raised we donated £40 to the Oaks and today I have sent a cheque for £180 to Wille Jack who is secretary of the MS Society, Moray branch so the money will benefit people with MS in the local area. Many thanks to the Oaks staff for allowing us to use their premises for the event.

Many thanks to everyone

Regards

Anita & Paul

Support Group News

posted 11 May 2013 02:55 by Alan B.

The Moray MS Support Group met yesterday and had a very successful, fundraising Cake Break to coincide with MS Awareness Week Lots of home made confection was consumed and enjoyed and money was raised for the MS Society. Thanks to Anita whose brainwave this was and to the Oaks for hosting it. And everyone pitched in with cake-baking, tombola prizes and good craic!

The next meeting of the Support Group will be on Friday 14th June 2013 at 11.00am at the Oaks as usual. All are welcome. Lisa Stronach, from the Short Breaks Bureau  will give a talk and tell us about her work advising MSers and others on short breaks and respite care suitable for people with mobility or health difficulties.

There is good news about the vacant post of MS Specialist Nurse! Following the retirement of Julie Williams, the post was advertised, interest has been expressed from a number of candidates and now interviews have been fixed for later this month. So the post - so vital for Moray MSers - should be filled soon.

MS Society Campaigns

posted 6 May 2013 06:02 by Alan B.

Now that MS Awareness Week has finished (you might have seen more than usual MS coverage in the Press) it is worth noting what the Campaigns team at the MS Society have been up to. I've found a link to an interesting video HERE. Take a look. You might also want to sign up to the MS Society campaign against the so-called postcode lottery in care provision for MSers in the UK. You can do this by clicking HERE and following the instructions.

What do you think about services for MSers in Moray? I've always been grateful for the caring support I've had from Specialist Nurses, OTs, Physiotherapists and other professionals. I'd also be lost without the support of other MSers in the area. But there are frustrations - money is obviously tight, Neurologists are miles away in Aberdeen. Rehabilitation facilities are slim. And we don't have a vibrant branch of the MS Society in Moray. We definitely need more volunteers to raise the tempo a bit and create more of a stir. Contact the local branch officers if you have the time and energy to get involved. Click HERE to find out more.

No Limits!

A local MSer sent me this video. So whatever difficulty you may or may not have with walking or getting about, there is a way to get to the beach or hills! I guess here is a chunky price to pay but it's good to know what's possible. Thanks to Jeni for the link.
